Luminous Voices: St Matthew Passion

  • Bella Concert Hall 4825 Mount Royal Gate Southwest Calgary, AB, T3E 6K6 Canada (map)

Cantare and Cantando join Calgary professional choir LUMINOUS VOICES and Dr. Timothy Shantz to perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental ST MATTHEW PASSION.

St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244

Its earliest verified performance was April 11, 1727—Good Friday—at Thomaskirche in Leipzig. It is the longest and most elaborate of all works by this Baroque master and represents the culmination of his sacred music and, indeed, of Baroque sacred music as a whole. This work is rarely performed as it requires a MASSIVE force to perform.

Our Partner: Luminous Voices

Luminous Voices is Calgary's JUNO-Nominiated professional chamber choir. Comprised of some of the finest ensemble singers in Calgary, the choir also brings together exceptional singers and musicians from across the continent to collaborate with local performers. Cantare has been thrilled to work with Calgary's professional chamber choir and Director Timothy Shantz on numerous occasions,

Our Partner: Rosa Barocca

Rosa Barocca’s mission is to present Alberta audiences with historically-informed performances of Baroque music using period instruments to capture the spirit, stylistic approach and distinctive sound of that glorious musical era. Newly minted and comprised of musicians from across Canada, the ensemble had its debut in November 2016 with two greatly acclaimed performances of Purcell’s “Hail! Bright Cecilia” in Calgary and Red Deer under their Artistic Director Claude Lapalme and presented by Early Music Voices.

At the moment, the orchestra does not have its own independent series and performs through co-productions with various choral societies in the province of Alberta.
